An Exploratory Study on Experiences of Gambling-Related Criminal Activities of Out-of-School Adolescents on Protective Disposition

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore delinquent adolescents¡¯ experiences of gambling-related criminal activities. This study analyzed qualitative data obtained from 7 out-of-school adolescents who had gambling experiences. They became to participate in gambling-related criminal activities by experiencing unstable emotional states and being unable to have control over their gambling. 4 categories (gambling as a deviant playing, being involved in criminal activities, lack of social protection, lack of environmental changes and social resources for quitting gambling) and 10 subcategories were extracted. Based upon the findings, several suggestions were made. The macro level suggestions include the development of policies to prevent out-of-school adolescents¡¯ criminal activities. The micro level suggestions include developing programs dealing with gambling and criminal activities at the same time, indicated prevention programs, programs dealing with peer relationships, and programs educating those surrounding adolescents.
